Tricycle Surprises

A couple weeks ago Kaitlyn rode into my parents room, found my cousin's toy ball, expanded it, and came out like this. We laughed so hard. I have never seen her play with it before and had no idea she knew she could get in it. She thought she was hot snot riding around with it on. Hehehe...

This trike is still a life saver for Kaitlyn. She is very quick. Today she was trying out a smaller riding toy and kept flipping off the back.

FYI: For anyone reading this months or a year from the date I posted it, Kaitlyn is wearing a spica cast after having hip surgery for CDH or Congenital Dysplasia of the Hip. We couldn't get her to try out any riding toys until she had been in the cast for about seven weeks. The big trike above has been great because the back wheels are far apart giving her stability and the seat is skinny allowing her cast to straddle it.

Pray for Dane

Please remember Dane in your prayers. Every time your little one toddles by or you see a young child playing think of Dane and say a quick prayer for his speedy recovery, his parents sanity (I'm only half joking), that they will all be well rested both in and out of the hospital and that the one surgery is all he needs.

Does this picture look familiar?

Here's the one I posted of Kaitlyn back in January after her surgery. Dane has gone through the same kind of surgery. He actually had the same doctor too.

This little guy has a long road of recover and cast time ahead of him. At times it can be really hard. His parents need God's help getting through it all. If you would like to peak into his life you can do so at the Wittschen's website.

Neat Swaps!

I thought we had until the 31st for these swap, but I just noticed sign up is until midnight tonight. Aunt Pitty Pats is hosting two swaps; an Annie Doll and a Re-Cycled Apron. I've signed up for the Annie doll swap. Once sign up has ended she will be sending us our partner or recipient along with the Annie doll pattern. Other then using the pattern to make the body of the doll there's full freedom in this swap. She wants everyone to use the pattern so the dolls will be consistent. I didn't know it until yesterday, but this swap will be fairly inexpensive. The doll is made of 1/2 yard of muslin. Do you know how cheap that stuff is? I bought mine yesterday for $1.99 a yard. I know agreeing to make something without having the pattern up front can be a bit intimidating, but don't make it that way. Look at it as a challenge for your crafting abilities. I just made a purse for the Bend-The-Rules Sewing swap and hadn't seen the pattern before signing up. Was it a challenge? Yes! Was it doable? Yes! Was it fun? Oh, yes! Sara from The Plaid Post used to do Win It Wednesday. On Thursday she would post a new pattern/tutorial she had found online and say you could win the item on Wednesday. Wednesday would roll around, she had the item finished and ready to be sent out to the winner. She didn't make a practice item before hand. So now you have a chance to do the same. Make an item you have only seen one picture of.

The Re-Cycled Apron swap is all about "up-cycling". Take an old shirt, jeans, or some other fabric item no longer needed and give it a new purpose. To a point this swap is cheaper then the Annie Doll swap because you don't need to buy anything unless you don't have things like thread, scrap fabric, or other random embellishments on hand. You are not given a pattern for this one. You can either follow her example or come up with your own design.

To sign up for either of these swaps go to Aunt Pitty Pats blog to get her email and the list of things you need to send her like your name and address.

Easter's Coming!!!

It's time to get ready for Easter. I'm currently making Kaitlyn a Simple Sunday Dress for Easter as well as a Boutique Easter Basket. Both easy patterns are made by Sew Sensible and sold at All Brands, You Can Make This, Etsy, and off her blog. If you check out Aimee's blog and look down the right side you will find direct links to all the sites selling her patterns. Now go show her some love. Her patterns really are excellent. They are written with the beginner in mind. Trust me on this... if you can kind of sew a straight line, you can use her patterns and look like an excellent seamstress.

Videos ~ Talking On The "Phone"

Having surgery and being in a spica cast has given Kaitlyn the chance to do something most kids her age don't normally get to do... play with pads! Tonight while prepping her sleeping diaper with the two pads Kaitlyn had to try them out. She loves to pull the strip off the back and stick them to her ears like phones. You can see the rest for yourself.

My Birthday

Yesterday I turned thirty-(runs hand over mouth making last number garbled). Mom, Kaitlyn and I went to the Mall so I could get my haircut. We were going to have a mani/pedi first, but we left to late for it. It turned out to be a very wet day so perhaps it's a good idea we didn't do it. When I get a pedicure I like to wear sandals away from the place so as not to smug them. Rain and open toe shoes don't mix.
While my hair was being cut mom and Kaitlyn went down to the play area. Kaitlyn played until she was completely worn out. I met them there then we headed off for the food court. A little Bourbon chicken does the body good. Hehehe... I bought Kaitlyn a cheese burger from Wendy's which she only ate the top bun of. After eating we rode the carousel.

First Kaitlyn and I rode. She was on the zebra and me a horse.
Here she is hanging on tight to her zebra.
Then mom and Kaitlyn rode the carousel. Kaitlyn rode on Fred the frog. Her zebra didn't have a name. =)
We ended our evening at Olive Garden with my dad and brother. They opened a new restaurant since I've been here. I'm thinking it's best to go to the old ones until this one gets some experience under their belt. We had bad, slow service. The waitress took 20 minutes or more to bring us our salad and bread sticks after our order was taken. She poured water down the back of my arm. Thank goodness it wasn't my back. Our food took a century. It was probably and hour after we gave our order that we finally got it. The was good. My dad had to wait around for a while to get and pay the bill. When he finally did pay it, the waitress brought back the wrong receipt, twice our price, with my dad's card number on it. So she charged us for another customer's bill. Personally... I would have left her a two dollar tip max and would have paid a little visit to the manager. After eating we all came back to my parents house for cake and ice cream, then we watched Twilight.

God Bless Texas

Sing roughly to God Bless The USA.

"I'm proud to be in Texas where at least I know there 'll be, snow cones to eat on a warm March day; sweet, tasty, with cream. And I won't forget the people who make it and give that treat to me. I'll gladly stand there, next you and get one this very day. 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love snow cones. God Bless the state of Texas!"
This was my first snow cone of the year and Kaitlyn's first ever. It was a medium, round top, Hurricane with cream. Yum, yum! I have since gone back and tried: Tiger Blood (my fav), Silver Fox, and Strawberry Shortcake. Goodness their good!
Ahhh... Another excellent thing about Texas. Being able to fly a kite on a warm March day. For that matter we could have flown these in January if kites had already been in out for sell. This $1 beauty along with an Elmo kite were flown last week.
These are things you take for granted when you live around them, but spend four years away and... well it's good to be home.

Walking in Cast

Here's a video of Kaitlyn walking on Sunday.

Quick - Crawling & Walking In Spica Cast Video

I took this video last night of Kaitlyn crawling then walking in her cast. Hopefully it's smoother for you then it is for me. I think the computer is being a bit special tonight or at least I hope that is why it keeps pausing the video.

Spica Cast Diapering And Taping

I've read several sites talk about how to diaper a child in a spica cast. I have yet to post anything about because I figured others have covered it even if I do it a bit different. However, I've decided it's time share a bit of what I've learned from personal experience. From what I have read you should us a size 1 or 2 diaper; I would like to strongly disagree. Dr Brock's nurse gave me a paper before leaving the hospital that says use a diaper one to two sizes smaller then the one they wore pre spica. I totally agree! When Kaitlyn poos it can go up the back, front, or even in the sides of the cast. A smaller diaper allows the poo to freely go up. A bigger diaper pulls the poo out of the cast as you remove it.

Another thing I've learned has been about diaper styles. In the hospital we used size 3 Pampers; they worked well. If we didn't put a diaper over the one inserted into her cast it would fall out because of the smaller size. On the way home from the hospital I bought size 3 Huggies; these were a bad purchase. Huggies have a lot of elastic in the back which pulls it all together preventing it from staying nicely tucked into the cast. If you have a smaller opening in your cast then more power to you on using Huggies. I don't suggest them. My suggestion is to save those Huggies until your little one is cast free. Our third package of diapers were size 4 Luvs. Luvs are our normal brand. For someone who hasn't ever used Luvs, they are cut like Pampers. The larger size is working great!!! I have been thankful on more then one occasion we're using the bigger diapers. By the way, before surgery Kaitlyn was in size 5.

For a while we used the shell to her cloth diapers to cover the diaper area and to hold the inserted diaper in place. The more she started getting around the harder the cast was on the cloth diapers. We moved to a simple rotation with disposable diapers that is working well. We insert a size 4 diaper (with a super absorbent pad) and strap a size 4 diaper over top her cast. Did you know those diapers can stretch? If you are using a really cheap diaper that doesn't have stretch... pay a little more. So your child is diapered. At the next diaper change you take off the outer diaper and set it aside. The inner diaper and pad are thrown away. The outer diaper now gets the tabs pulled off (you don't need those scratching your little one), a super absorbent pad placed inside, and the combo inserted into the cast. Now diaper outside her cast with a fresh diaper and you're done. Rotating the diapers keep you from throwing away your money on a larger diaper to cover the cast. The stretched out tabs are going to be pulled off anyway so don't worry about the stretch you put on that diaper.

Diapering at night... Even when they aren't in a cast nightly diapering can be a challenge. Since being in the cast Kaitlyn seems to pee more at night. I have yet to do it, but putting the mattress at an incline (head up) will cause the pee to run down into the diaper rather then up the cast. We had a lot of trial and error at night until we learned what really works for us. I put two pads in Kaitlyn's nighttime diapers and I use a size 5 diaper. The first time or two I tried this it did okay, but I still had a partially dry diaper that leaked. I thought about buying different pads at night that didn't have a plastic back, but then came up with this...

I cut two pads up the back.

I pull the back open a little so there's a nice gap for all the pee to flow through to the diaper.

Here's the diaper with two pads, cut up the back, as close to side-by-side as I can get them. The smaller the diaper you use the more these two will have to be overlapped. Because more pee runs to the back I insert this mega diaper with the pads starting at the back cast edge.

Taping the cast has little to do with the actual diapering process, but it's important. While I had the camera out I thought I would take some shots of her taped cast.

All the white you see is waterproof medical tape. It comes in different sizes, but mine is 1" wide. I tried the slimmer stuff and goodness was that a pain to put on. Under all the white is a Gortex lining that covers the underside of the cast, some foam, and gauze. If you don't tape the Gortex within a day or two of the child coming home from the hospital the lining will rip. You don't want this happening. On her second cast the Gortex ripped on both knees before I could get it taped down. Thankfully I was able to pull it together and tape it down. Once you have waterproof tape all around the cast openings you then need to add Duck tape to hold it on. The waterproof tape sticks well to the Gortex, but not the cast. Duck tape comes in most to all cast colors. As you can see the hospital Kaitlyn had her surgery at uses a darker purple then Duck tape supplies a color for. However, their pink is spot on. As you can see from the front shot the tape between Kaitlyn's legs is damaged. From time to time I have to take off the Duck tape (carefully) and add more waterproof tape, then more Duck tape. Near the end of her being in the last cast I wouldn't take off the old tape, I would just add to it. When she had her cast down to her toes I still put both tapes on the toe area. I also put Duck tape around her ankle/heel and knee areas to protect them from all the crawling she was doing. I found myself almost nightly adding more tape to the knee of her one fully casted leg so I started putting a man's tube sock on that leg. My main reason for taping the knee and heel was to keep more cast from being applied to her existing cast, making her even heavier. Heaven knows I don't want her heavier.

EDIT: Near the end of Kaitlyn's cast time I realized we still had a lot of size 4 diapers. I swapped the size 5 at night for the 4. We never had an issue with leaks with the smaller diapers. I think the pads were the trick not the size of diaper.

Clean Up

Kaitlyn loves being outside. While we were living in the UK (4 years and 2 months) we couldn't stay outside long. Most of the time it was cold or cool, high winds, or raining. When it was warm we went out. Last week it was raining here so when it stopped and warmed up we went outside.
While Kaitlyn road her tricycle, I decided to clean up all the limbs from downed trees. The pile behind Kaitlyn, near the fence is of green plants so it won't burn yet; I tried. =) All the dead burned leaving the big green leaves. Look on the other side of the fence... there used to be six trees I believe laying over there. We pulled all, but two into the burn pile. Yesterday we put leaves and small sticks around the two remaining trees and tried to burn them where they were. I see this morning they are still out there. =( Kaitlyn's favorite activity while we do this? As you can see she loves riding the four wheeler.
She climbs off and on it most of the time we're working. By the time we go in we all smell like smoke and Kaitlyn is DIRTY.
For the last three mornings, before breakfast, Kaitlyn asks to get on her tricycle. As soon as I set her down she puts a foot into the air and says "shoe!" I no longer run for a pair. As soon as she gets shoes on she expects to go outside.
For all enquiring minds, Kaitlyn is wearing a 24 months Carter's dress which is why it's so short. Normally, I put a 3t-4t dress on her so it's plenty long enough to cover her cast. Also, the hump on her back is the spica cast. It goes down to both knees. If you click on the last picture you can see the purple cast sticking out from under her dress.

Blackened House

Just when mom thought she had all the black off the walls from burning candles after hurricane Ike, Tia had to go and turn 29. Thankfully Tia blew them out before to much damage was done. Hehehe... Kaitlyn enjoyed saying, "Happy to you, Tia". She said it all evening and into the next day. Now when she sees one of the lighters she says "happy to you".
Kaitlyn didn't waste time putting down her piece of chocolate cake. She even cleaned the plate with her finger. Enjoy it while it lasts kid. Once we move I'm cutting you off again from most sweets. By the way, the boy bib she's wearing she picked out herself. She likes the balls on it.

Spica Skirts & Swap Purses

There's so much going on I don't know where to start...

I've been doing a lot of sewing. I'm so thankful if Kaitlyn must be in a body cast (aka, spica cast) she can wear skirts. I've made her four skirts and a t-shirt dress since her first surgery. Yesterday I completed a bandanna skirt that turned out really cute. I had purchased her a black and hot pink pirate shirt in Galveston that needed a skirt. A bandanna skirt with the points down seemed like a good complement. If you look close in this picture you can see I made the waistband out of bandanna remnants. This skirt was really easy. I love the results.

Here's Kaitlyn riding her tricycle with her new skirt. What? You've never seen a pirate wear a sun hat? Of course they do. Hehehe... I would just like to point out Kaitlyn isn't fat she is still wearing her spica cast.

Because I make her skirts and pants often enough, I knew her pre-surgery waist was 19" and her spica cast waist is 23". I'm amazed the big cast only added 4" to her waist.

This is my trial Charming Handbag that we are doing for the Bend-The-Rules Sewing swap. I'm so glad I tried the pattern out before trying to make the actual swap purse. The seam ripper came in handy on a few places of this purse. I used fusible fleece to give it structure, but ended up having to pull it off the fabric and allow it to "stand" alone. If you try fleece as a stuffer I suggest overlapping the seams 1/4" and using a zigzag stitch. For some reason the pattern doesn't say how long to make the handle. Yes, they show a demo of the finished product, but that doesn't tell me inches. It also didn't say how wide or long to make the casing for the handle. What I did like was my own handle sewing technique. The pattern says to finish the ends of the handle as well as sewing down the side; loop it through the handle casings on both sides and sew the loop together. I was then supposed to turn the handle so the ugly part was hidden in the casing. Instead I folded and ironed the handle, slipped it completely unsewn through both casings, unfolded the ends enough to sew the two together 1/4" from the edge. I then refolded the handle and sewed it completely around as one big loop. Sure that meant me working the handle through the casings, but the end result was great!!! I didn't have an ugly, bulky seam. =) I plan on doing the swap purse handle the same way.

Birthday Party Ideas

We are planning to have Kaitlyn's 2.5 year birthday party before we rush off to our next base in May. For those who are scratching their heads about us throwing a half birthday, and don't know or forgot, Kaitlyn was born on Christmas Eve. We decided to start the tradition of a half birthday party with her second birthday. For her actual birthday we took her to BKing on base, had ice cream at Basken Robbins, let her open a couple gifts then called it a day. Mind you we were staying in a hotel at the time because we flew out two days later.

So... this May... I'm trying to decide how to do it right. What I would love to do is buy a bunch of beach balls and water activities so the kids can have a heyday outside. However, Kaitlyn will either be in a cast or brace during that time and can't get wet. Yes, I know she will be able to take a bath once she is in a brace, but she cannot run around and play like she would want to do if playing in water. So her current situation brings us all back inside. What can we do inside? Does it matter if you have a theme or not? I heard of someone doing a "ties and tutus" party and thought it sounded like fun. With that party you give the boys handmade ties and the girls tutus. My thought is... but then what? What games can they play? I don't remember us playing games at parties when I was a kid. I don't want people to be bored though. Should we go somewhere? Chucke Cheese? Petting zoo? I've thought about doing a "baby" party where all the girls bring their favorite baby doll. I could make doll clothes so each girl could dress up their baby for the party. Where does that leave the boys though??? Do you just say forget the kids and have food, cake, and fellowship? That's what we did as kids.

Anyone have ideas? I'm open. Currently Kaitlyn loves Hermie. He's a caterpillar who doesn't like being "just Hermie". God keeps telling him He isn't finished with him yet. Kaitlyn watches the DVD at least three times a day. However we did lady bugs for her first birthday. Since being in the US she has been watching Sprouts (preschool channel, for all not in the know) and has fallen in love with Elmo and Barney. So do we do an Elmo/Barney party? Really people I need some thoughts here. I feel like the kids in attendance need to have fun, but it's Kaitlyn's party and it wouldn't be fair to her to have the party somewhere (or doing something) she couldn't participate in.

One thought I had was doing like some parents we saw at The Woodlands mall. They had a party at Build-A-Bear for all the kids while a couple adults went to the food court and decorated tables. The kids had cake and goodie bags waiting for them there. One party didn't do any decor; it looked like adults met up with them at the food court. All the kids from the party went on the carousel.

"Washable" Markers

"Do you like my make-up, Nana? I did it myself."
Don't ask me... I don't know what her deal is with putting marker on her face lately. When she gets it on her hands and arms whether it be on purpose or accident she will tell me it's ugly. For some reason it's okay to put it on her face. Last night she put black all around her mouth. Mind you I don't let her do it, I discover her with it. =)

Newsboys And DC Talk Merge?!!!

Michael Tait has taken over as lead singer of the Newsboys. As a teenager I saw both the Newsboys and DC Talk in concert, I had all their albums, yet I still can't picture the two merging. Okay they aren't exactly merging. Michael is stepping in and the long time lead singer is stepping out. They had their first interview since the switch at the Dallas ATF-Battlecry. I guess I will have to wait and see how this combo works.

Girly Giveaway!!!

If you would like a chance to win this three piece give away just go to Make It And Love It and register. It's that easy! Included in this giveaway are the capri's (Old Navy, 3t), ribbon belt, and matching purse all pictured above.

Accidental Tricycle

Mom and dad bought a trike as a gift for my cousin's baby. She's five months younger then Kaitlyn. Dad really thought Laci needed this BIG trike. The problem is Laci is small. She is so small she looks like she is under a year old. Dad busted the box open and immediately started putting the big trike together. Of course Kaitlyn thought it was hers. When he was done with it him and mom went somewhere. While they were gone Kaitlyn rode the thing all over the house. After talking with mom a bit on what to do about the trike which is even to big for Kaitlyn to reach the pedals on, we decided to buy a smaller riding toy for Laci.
The tricycle has become a new set of legs for Kaitlyn. She goes all over the house even in places I didn't think the thing could fit. Sometimes we even have problems getting her to eat because she doesn't want to get off it. I was very tempted to take it to her doctor's appointment today so she could have more mobility; we left it at home.

So the tricycle that wasn't supposed to be has turned out to be a really good thing.

Comments

I will not be posting Katrina comments left on my Galveston Island post. I do not for a minute downplay the trauma that occurred to the gulf coast in that storm and right after. I know it was bad. While we were in Galveston we were talking about how bad the island looked 5.5 months after and wondered how New Orleans currently looks; knowing it must still be bad too. It seems if a storm wasn't as bad as Katrina or the devastation wasn't thought to be as sever as New Orleans then it's really not worth talking about. How selfish are we? If this is a contest then shut up New Orleans at least you didn't have a tidal wave wipe out your town sucking you out to sea. You thought all the flooding was bad? At least you had warning to get out of the city. All those poor people gone forever by the tsunami that didn't have any forewarning. If it's a contest... they win. I was going to post a picture of the tsunami or it's destruction, but honestly they are to awful to show. A picked through a lot of dead body photos before I gave up my search. I can't post those here. Let's just say the US cannot compare.
By the way, my parents live 90+ miles from Galveston. If you look around their house and land you can see small signs a storm went through here. Thankfully they live on a hill so flooding wasn't an issue, but there was some leaking. It seems their biggest issue was being without power for a couple weeks so they used a lot of candles causing the house to turn black. Mom has since repainted.

Galveston Island

Katrina who? Let's talk Ike. Why is it that we still hear about hurricane Katrina, but not Ike? Ike didn't just devastate Galveston Island as though once the storm passed everything was back to normal, it's still devastating. We went to Galveston a couple weekends ago and couldn't believe 5.5 months after the storm the island was still destroyed. I thought there would be a little damage still visible, but for the most part the island would be back to normal. Boy was I wrong! If I lived there I would be feeling hopeless about the clean up. Yes, there is still clean up to be done. There were big piles of debris between groups of homes. We saw several homes on the beach without stairs, with new stairs, and one with a ladder leading up to the home.
Check out this home. Where's the roof?
I'm sure this person would like their stairs, wall, roof and furniture back. How about the truck parked out front? Where's the owner?
This is the end of a long fishing pier. There wasn't anything left of the pier itself. There was a truck on the front portion of the pier that is now stuck on the beams just like the one you see here. Only a crane could remove it.

The Flagship Hotel. The first hotel built over water in the US is now out of commission. As we were driving by we could see curtains flying in the wind.
Here's the entrance to the hotel. There was a car stuck on the other side.I remember going to the beach and looking through the souvenir shops. Sadly they are gone. When we drove to where they had been this is what greeted us.

We drove through this neighborhood while heading to the beach. It was a small subdivision with street after street looking something like this. Notice the stairs are still standing on the first one, but the house is gone.
Could this be the house from the previous picture? Do you think anyone is home? We saw this house out in a field.
This was the sight that greeted us as we drove into Galveston. There were sail boats down streets, on the side of the road and like this one in a business parking lot. If you notice behind this boat is a main road. It's almost leaning on the roof of a picnicking area. We didn't walk to the table because we couldn't tell if the roof of the place had been braced with a couple 4x4's onto the picnic table or if that was how they originally made it.
I spoke with a lady at Whataburger about all the damage and she said their biggest problem was not being allowed back to their homes in enough time to save anything. Like the house with the missing roof and wall. If the owners could have come back right after the storm they might of been able to save their furniture or some of it. While driving along the seawall we stopped the car to see if there really wasn't a beach. The rumors we heard were true; water was lapping against rocks. We couldn't see the sand there at all. Further down where the old shops used to be had sand. The island was doing a big push to have suitable places for youth to go for spring break. They are even working on Sundays to rebuild the beaches. I feel sorry for all who live there that have lost so much, everything in some cases, and are trying to rebuild their lives; they have a long way to go.

Timely Surgery

I forgot the most important part about Kaitlyn's second surgery... Dr Brock is a Christian. Okay, I haven't come right out and asked if he's a Christian, but he scheduled her first one around his mission trip to Mexico and was talking in the hallway about the kids in the youth group. Yes, going to church doesn't make you a Christian, but by his countenance I believe he is saved. Well... After the surgery Wednesday he told us he had a dream about Kaitlyn and woke up saying he had to get her pins out. Mind you he has many patients and a family, but it was my child who was on his mind first thing in the morning. By the way, he talked like this happened on Tuesday (day before the surgery). Late Tuesday morning he got a call from a parent saying their child was stuffed up and couldn't have surgery on Wednesday. He immediately told Armonde to call us to see if we could fill the slot. He said he felt pressed to get her pins out ASAP. He told us before the surgery that if they were in to far he would have to leave them. Thank God she had just started walking and hadn't fallen on the right hip yet. When they called about the surgery they told us she wasn't supposed to be walking. Oops! If they hadn't rescheduled the surgery she would have walked on the hip for another week possibly driving the pins in to far to retrieve. She could have kept those pins in her hip for the rest of her life. Thank God Dr Brock listens to Him and removed the pins a week early.

Kaitlyn's Second Surgery

Two weeks ago we set up Kaitlyn's surgery to have the pins in her right hip removed tomorrow. A week ago I got a call from Armonde, Dr Brock's nurse, saying someone canceled for the next day's surgery and wanted to know if we could come in. I jumped at the chance. She said going on Feb 25th instead of March 4th would make Kaitlyn first on the surgery list rather then second. I want her first if I can help it which is why I took her up on the offer.

The good news and the bad news is...

  • The surgery is behind us.

  • Dr Brock said it went well.

  • She scars "nicely" meaning she isn't getting horribly bad scars from the procedures.

  • Kaitlyn now has a cast that hits her above both knees.

However...

  • The pins moved allowing the bone graft to shift up which means she now has a flat area for the joint to sit on rather then a nice cupped area. I know I'm saying that wrong, but hopefully you get the idea that it isn't ideal.

  • She could possibly need the same surgery again when she is four or five years old because of the graft moving.

  • She will have to wear a brace "for a long time" as Dr Brock put it; again because of the moved graft.

Please pray Kaitlyn's tendons will tighten nicely around her new formed hip causing it to stay perfectly in place which will prevent another round of surgeries. As of right now she is only guaranteed one more surgery and that will be to removed the plate and four screws from her femur. Her next surgery will be six months to one year from her first surgery (Jan 19th).

Although this isn't a great picture, you can see her new spica cast here.

The light purple is Duck Tape. The cast is so dark I told mom we should take her to Walmart and see how well the cast matches the dark blue tape. I ended up needing the tape before our Walmart trip so we are going with the purple. I think it's a nice contrast. =) As you can see the cast goes up to the ridge on her chest or right around the dolls foot. Although she does have a little bit more of her left leg showing you are kind of seeing up the cast making it look really short here.
For anyone wondering this is her sleeping shirt; a whopping $3.50 at Walmart for a shirt two sizes bigger then she would normally wear. The diaper is a 1.0 BumGenius one size pocket diaper from Cotton Babies. She has been able to wear this same diaper since she was two months old (around 8 lbs).

You can print it out in any of the offered sizes at any time. I know some of you are scratching your heads, but stay with me here. Have you ever bought a paper pattern and cut it out in a size... whatever, and then your child grew and you needed a size larger? Well, you can get a size larger are smaller here (if it's offered) and not have to buy a new pattern. How great is that!!! When I started buying ebooks Kaitlyn was a size 1, but now she is a size 2 and I can keep using them. Also, now that she is in a cast I could make the pattern in a 3 or 4 and it will fit her great.
