Secondary Infertility

Recently I read an article about secondary infertility (SI). SI is when you conceive your first child without any problems, but must need medical intervention to conceive again. Many times people don't know why they can't conceive. They may try for a long time because they don't know there's a problem. The lady said because she conceived naturally the first time she finds people are harsh with her about infertility. She said she receives rude comments on how she has one and should be happy from those still struggling to have the one.

I was shocked on many levels while reading the article. I'm on or have been on both sides of her struggle. I've been one to have little sympathy for someone with SI. I figure if they did it naturally once they can do it again. Truthfully we have a VERY slim chance of getting pregnant each month meaning it could happen naturally, just not likely. Those with SI could have just hit the month perfectly early on, gotten pregnant, then realized they have a problem when trying for number two. In 10 years I could always fall pregnant like someone with SI did in their first months of ttc. Thursday I was talking with someone from my church who just learned she was pregnant. A said she can go a year without a period then bleed for 60 days. Because of her crazy cycle A went on birth control just to have more of a handle on her cycle. She said they had just gotten off the pill so they could start ttc and immediately got pregnant. If she was someone who was always on the pill she might not know she is dealing with fertility issues.

Speaking of A being pregnant, please keep her and her baby in your prayers. Although she has two little boys, A has been pregnant many times, but doesn't always make it past the first trimester. The Bible says all the days of our lives were written down before one came to pass. In the medical world day one is after one full day post conception. This little one is over seven weeks old. A needs peace during this time. She said she isn't telling about the pregnancy for fear of losing it any day. A doesn't need to live in fear so please pray for her.

The second way I relate to the article is ttc after having Kaitlyn. People really do have little sympathy for those still on the infertility journey. You know I don't think most people really want sympathy; just not to be treated, talked about, ect... like we're second class citizens because we are willing to keep marching down this rocky road.

Yesterday I was thinking of all the politicians who hold my fertility and thousands of others in their hands. More then likely it is either someone who has chosen not to have kids or has naturally had all the children they desired. It's someone who infertility hasn't graced their door step. They have no idea the emotional, physical, and financial struggle that infertility brings to a couple. I have thought about this often. Especially because in the UK I can legally on have two embryos put in at a time. If I had a choice I would put three in hoping one would "stick". In all my pondering I came back to the same thing I've heard a couple times and know others have heard many times and that is those with infertility shouldn't do more then pray and keep trying. There are those who believe fertility treatments are wrong. Of course the majority of those who believe that don't deal with infertility. I remember where I was the first time someone questioned the ethics behind fertility treatments. My thought was girl you haven't even started ttc. Knowing her other medical problems she is dealing with, infertility could easily be one of them. If she does decide to try she may be singing a different tune.

Anyway, I was going through this random dialogue in my head. To those who say fertility treatments - especially IVF - are wrong...

Look this baby in the eyes and tell her she was never supposed to be.

Tell her if you had your choice she never would have been.

Oh come on don't be like that. Yes, I know it's harder to say, "I wish you were never born when looking a baby in the eyes."

Is this easier? Go ahead and tell us we don't deserve children, but when you do make sure you back it with scripture not just your fertile minded opinion.

Now stop being a coward and trying to hide behind the Bible to justify Kaitlyn having never come to existence. If you read your Bible you would know your excuse doesn't hold water.

We could mix the ingredients together all we want - like the sperm and egg in an IVF - but we can't give it life. God is the giver of life. (Genesis 2:7) The doctor could inject as many sperm into eggs he wants, but only God can breathe the breath of life into it.

Psalms 139:13-16

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

All the days. God knew how Kaitlyn would be conceived. Life begins at conception... He planned it. He chose not to give life to some of the other embryos the doctor tried to create. In a couple weeks we will learn if He has chosen to allow us to keep some of those embryos. And next month we will learn if He has chosen for Kaitlyn to be an only child or a big sister.

Potty Training Time

I'm back to putting Kaitlyn on the potty once an hour. We started up again yesterday. For whatever reason she had to sit on the potty forever twice in the morning then by the afternoon she had no desire to try. We had one success yesterday and Kaitlyn got a sticker. This morning was a success so again she got to pick a sticker. I don't think she knows what to do with them. She usually carries them around for a while, rolls them up, and eventually gets them off their paper backing. I see bits of her sticker on the floor right now.

Do you like the top and bow I drew on her picture? Hehehe... Neal said she looked to much like a boy in the picture. I have to agree she does. By the way, she doesn't normally potty at the bottom of the stairs. I took this picture a couple weeks ago. Kaitlyn was taking forever wanting to read every "bathroom" book she owns. I finally picked up her, the potty and whatever books were on her lap and brought her downstairs.

On The Phone Again

Kaitlyn talked with Nana tonight. Notice how she already looks like a teenager chatting on the phone.

Sometimes I will see her with her hand to her ear while she talks; she's pretending to be on a cell phone when she does this. She makes me laugh.

Pictures

My little firecracker on the 4th of July. She rode her first fair ride. I wanted it to be the merry-go-round, but she wouldn't sit still so her and I both went on a faster ride that spun us around.
I didn't end up making her an outfit for the 4th. I cheated and bought this dress from the BX then made her a big bow so she would stand out from the other 20 girls all wearing the same dress. Actually I never saw another child in the dress, but I could have.
How many times do I have to tell her the stroller is for the baby (her doll)??? She will take the doll out, if one happens to be in it, and say "baby" just before she sits down. She looks so funny when she leans back because it's so narrow her shoulders are pushed together.

We see this face almost every time we pull out a camera.
See what I mean.
What does she think she's doing?! This is an all new thing for her. She usually stands on the arm of the couch to reach the bookshelf you can see on her right. Of course the first book she pulls down isn't enough she most do everything in her power to clear the shelf. Friday she decided to just STAND UP on the back of the couch to reach those books. The child is going to make me go fully gray before she's five.

Brrr... Yesterday was cold enough Kaitlyn spent the morning curled up in her quilt.

You've Got Mail

Now that Kaitlyn can open our entryway door our mail isn't safe. If I can tell she is playing with an envelope I either go get it or ask her to bring it to me. Not all our mail is for us. We still get stuff for the last two tenants. I hate that we have a mail slot. At least in the US it's illegal to put something in someone's mailbox. Here in the UK we get everything shoved through our door. It's cheaper to pay someone to go door to door putting fliers through the mail slot then postage. We don't pay for the newpaper nor do we like it. I was perfectly fine letting Kaitlyn throw it around.

Masters

Kaitlyn has mastered opening our entryway door. Thankfully the front door locks with a key so she can't get out it.

If it weren't for the key lock we would never be able to keep her in the house again. Just wait in a couple months we will move back to the States and Kaitlyn will master the round door knob. I guess my parents getting the front door handle that you must push it down with your thumb was a great idea; it will take her longer to figure it out.

18 Months Old

*Sniff, sniff* My baby is a year and a half old today. She doesn't seem to understand how big she is getting. She is still just under 31" so I think her arms must be growing because she can reach so much more then she used to. Nothing is safe anymore. Our bed is about 3' off the ground and she can climb on it. Once on the bed she will play with stuff on our headboard. Books, clocks, and so forth all have Kaitlyn's grubby fingerprints on them. Someone her in the UK got the bright idea to put on/off switches on plug-ins. I'm not sure what they were really thinking. I now have problems keeping our phone upstairs charged and my clock on the right time because Kaitlyn turns off the switches. She thinks it's a fun game.

Oh, my goodness Balamory is going to drive me nuts. This is the dumbest show ever. Seriously it is one of the shows on Cbeebies I hate the most. I also dislike the show with the car that is always chasing criminals. It's stupid! I'm not a Barney hater because I think Barney can teach kids good things. However one of the ladies on Balamory was just yelling at a cop saying his slowness in sorting through the lost and found is putting her off in getting her book back. I'm think, "hmmm, you left your book somewhere and now you're blaming someone?" Seeing how this is a kids show you would expect something good to come from the lady yelling. Nope! They made the lost and found boxes the cops fault until the end. The lady didn't apologize nor help sort the boxes. Tell me what Kaitlyn is supposed to learn from that?!!! Great now The Shiny Show is starting. I just find this one annoying. At least they do teach some good things on this show.
